VikingCon 2003 Void Tournament

I participated in the Void part of VikingCon 2003. I had a great time and got to play lots of games, so I thought I would share :)
The Void tournament had 8 players. There were also tons and tons of roleplayers at Viking Con, but who cares about them ;)

Here is a list of the armies:

2 x Koralon
2 x Viridian
4 x Syntha

I played my new (and completely unpainted) Koralon army:

7 x Assault Araktons
- 1 Leader
8 x Assault Araktons
- 1 leader
4 x Larvans
(one with a Neutron Staff) 1 x Broodmaster
1 x Phazon

When I arrived at the Con, my army wasn't even assembled, but fortunately Graham and Henrik had some superglue and helped put it together.

Game 1 - Koralon Vs. Syntha

My first game was against Morten's Syntha. I had totally kicked Morten's butt with my unassembled Koralon the only other time we played. I think the fact that he not only lost to an unpainted army, but also to a girl was a bit hard on him. Since he didn't want that to happen again, he had but together a rather well painted, evil, Syntha power army with lots of nasty robots.

In the beginning it all went well. There was a lot of terrain, so I could advance without getting shot to pieces. When he was finally able to shoot at my broodmaster, he just couldn't wound it.

It was only when I made it into close combat it all went wrong. I thought that my assault araktons would be able to just walk through those little robots.... well apparently those little buggers are pretty tough and downright nasty in CC too. It got even worse when his regular robots smashed my other assault arakton squad on the other flank. In the end there was no Koralon survivors, but I did kill a lot of his army too.

Game 2 - Koralon Vs. Viridians

Ah, that had to be easy! Viridians die much easier than those nasty robots. Torben did have one of those Tiger APCs in his army, but that didn't look that tough (I thought). In this game we played with three objectives. Two of them were worth 250 VP while the last (placed in the middle of the table) was worth 500 VP. I decided that it would be easiest if I just wiped out his army and then took the objectives.

I started by opening up a portal with my phazon and threw my Broodmaster and Assault arakton sqaud through it. I think that scared Torben a little bit. Unfortunately the performance of my aliens was less scary and they managed to kill ½ heavy weapons team. Then the viridians fired back and almost all the assault araktons died. Torben had deployed a squad of commandos behind some bushes and I had already completely forgotten them. He advanced them and shot some assault araktons with their flamer. Yikes.

In the next turn the aliens who had come through the portal continued being quite lame. The only thing that made me happy was that the broodmaster was in close combat with the sole survivor from the heavy weapons team, so he couldn't be shot at. Then Torben remembered that the heavy weapons guy had to take a command test which he failed and was removed from the table. Torben's marine squad then shot at the broodmaster and killed it :(

Now it was Torben's turn to forget his commandos. They were in charge range of my assault araktons, but he moved another sqaud instead. Super! Now my assault araktons charged instead and they actually managed to kill something! Lesson number 1: Be careful about painting camo on your units!

It wasn't enough though, because Torben's army (and the nasty APC) were far too close now. I gave up on holding the objective that was placed in my deployment zone and rushed my larvans and phazon towards the tiger and Torben's shock marines. Of course they all got cut to pieces and by turn five the only figure I had left was a Larvan with one wound. Torben on the other hand got almost 1500 VP!

Game 3 - Koralon Vs. Syntha

Well, I wasn't exactly number one by now.... My third and last game was against Graham's Syntha. I was beginning to think that I preferred Syntha to Viridians......

We played the game on Graham's supercool transmitter module.

The objective was to hold table quarters. I thought I might have a hard time with this mission since I only had three squads and my broodmaster. Again I decided that it was probably better to just kill all the robots and then portal the different squads to different table quarters.

Advancing across that table turned out quite lethal. A lot of the assault araktons didn't even make it into close combat and when they did they were slaughtered by the smallest of the robots. Why-oh-why did they ever call them "ASSAULT" araktons :(

On the right flank it looked a little better. The broodmaster was making a mess of Grahams tank, but then the tank disingaged (with one wound left out of four) and shot the broodmaster to pieces. Before that the broodmaster had cut almost a whole squad of nasty-big-robots-with-two-wounds-each-and-toughness-six though.

Unfortunately my super expensive larvan squad couldn't even finish the last robot. Shame on them! In the end Graham got three table quarters and I got one. Ah well, it was better than against the viridians!

In the end I managed to finish last (I was even beaten by the kid who didn't bother showing up for the last game!). The tournament was won by Henrik and his Hydra (aka The Big Nasty):

Morten was number two and Torben number three. Even though I didn't win any games, I had a really good time. The other armies were awesome and the terrain was excellent. I will definitely be back next year! Here are a couple of other pics from the tournament:
