ChopCon 2004

ChopCon is a small Danish Wargaming/RPG convention. It takes place on the island of Falster which is really far away from everything in the world. A bit like Greenland or Australia. This years ChopCon was special (or so I'm told) because 6 German and 1 Irish Void players were attending the tournament.

Søren and I started out around noon on friday. We packed the car and picked up Torben (aka Phoenikuz). Unfortunately the car was pretty much full, so Torben had to share the back seat with all his terrain. Everytime we took a left turn, he had to hold it to avoid drowning in ruins and hills.

The trip took about 4½ hours (it could have taken less, but we took a huge detour). When we arrived (around 6PM) the place was quickly filling up and the Battlefield Berlin guys were setting up the shop. Man, that store has some cool stuff! Reaper, Warmachine, Freebooter, Spyglass, Hasslefree, Fenryll, Dragonrune, Warcrow, Masquerade, and more. I could tell that Søren was really worried when he saw the look in my eyes.

After hanging around the store, I got to see Sven's (Vulture) Viridian army. If you hang around mini-painter or miniforums, I'm sure you have seen pics of it. It's just fantastic. The pics really don't do it justice. All the little details are just amazing and Sven even has matching terrain!

We hadn't signed up for anything that evening, so we just hung around and talked to people. I got to watch a couple of Bloodbowl games which looked rather fun (even though one of them took like five hours!). We also played a card game which Frank (aka Hoarfrost) had brought. It was about creating a band, but I never got any instrument besides an air guitar and my only bandmember was my mum.... for some reason I didn't win the game. It was great fun though and if I see that game somewhere, I'll definitely pick it up, though I'm not sure I'll invite Morten to play. That man is dangerous!

Would you play a rock star
card game with this man?

The next morning (after breakfeast) it was time for the Void tournament. If you have read my VikingCon coverage, you'll know Void really isn't my game and I can never remember the rules. That doesn't stop me from playing though, cos Void is a great game! For this tournament, I had brought the Metal Alien Menace (my unpainted Koralon army).

The metal menace in it's army transport box

Here is my army list
1 x Broodmaster
7 x Larvans - 2 with Neutron Staff
3 x Larvans - 1 with Neutron Staff
11 x Assasult Araktons (Squad Deva) - with Leader
6 x Assault Araktons (Squad Gorgora) - with Leader
6 x Assault Araktons (Squad Britney) - with Leader

About 1000 points.

My armylist was a lot like the VikingCon list which had sucked badly. Actually this time it was even worse, because I had misunderstood the rules and therefore not brought a Phazon. The best thing about this army list, is that people are really scared of it. It has almost no shooting, but it's pretty good in close combat. Unfortunately, it almost never makes it into close combat.

The tournament consisted of three games pr. person with a different scenario for each. Since I was the only female wargamer at the tournament... erm sorry...the only female wargamer in the country.. or in the world...I got to draw opponents for everyone. Graham (Mr. Tournament Organizer) had arranged it, so the Danes would play against someone from either Germany or Ireland in the first round. I got to play Sven and his Viridians.

The hands of fate

The mission was about trying to recover a data chip. You got 50 points for touching the chip first and 200 for holding it at the end of the game. You also got points for the models you killed and for squads which were panicked at the end of the game. Sven was allowed to infiltrate half the way to the objective with his commandoes, so I had no chance of getting to the objective first.

A lesson in focusing the camera. In the background, Frank
is eating miniatures, and he doesn't even play Koralon!

The game went pretty well until the first turn where I suffered a brain malfunction and placed my Broodmaster in front of Sven's guns. 2 x Rocket Launcer + 5 x Gauss Rifles = 1 x Dead Broodmaster.

Sven in deep thoughts

Oh well, I thought, nothing new here. In the rest of the game I kept running after Sven's Commandoes, totally unable to kill the guy with the data chip. In the last turn I managed to catch the three commandoes, who had the chip with my large Assault Arakton unit (Squad Deva) who failed to kill anything and chose to panic instead. So basically Sven got the points for my entire army except one Larvan and one Assault Arakton. I did manage to kill and devour his cutsie dinos though. That'll teach him!

The Koralon chase the guy with the data chip

I had a really good time playing even though the game wasn't super exciting. Sven is a really nice guy and his army is totally cool.

Time for the next game! This time I was fighting Thorsten's Junkers who appeared to be rather numerous. The game was about getting objectives and carrying them to your own deployment zone. Unfortunately my deployment zone didn't contain a lot of cover and Thorsten had a rather nasty gun pointed at it.

My Deployment zone. The templates indicate where Thorsten's cannon has made big craters.

"Better go get those objectives" I thought and moved along. In the beginning it went rather well. The Broodmaster and some Larvans made a mess of his miniature Land Rovers and some of his grenadiers, and Squad Gorgora managed to get one of the objectives. Then in turn 3 or 4 it went horribly wrong. Another grenadier squad totally crushed my large larvan squad and the last of the Land Rovers finished off the Broodmaster. On top of that, the useless Squad Deva was burned to a crisp by a heavy flame thrower carried by a guy that looked like a fat GW terminator.

At this point, the Metal Alien Menace was still kicking human butt.

The heroes of the game were two Larvans who were in close combat with a 12-man junker squad for several turns and managed to kill lots of them and make them panic in the end. Oh, and I didn't win the game, but we had a lot of fun!

The Junker Commander

Next game was againt Torben's Viridians. Those guys totally crushed me at VikingCon, so I expected history to repeat itself. The game objective was to have the most points at the middle of the table at the end of turn 6. There was quite a lot of terrain - good for me.

The Metal Alien Menace deploys. The objective was the empty space in the center of the board

Then something surprising happened! A kid around the age of 12 asked if he could be on my side in the game. I accepted, not knowing that the little fellow was actually the God of Dice. We started out by moving a bit around and then something weird happened. My small Larvan squad killed most of Torbens Commandoes and they panicked. I advanced my Broodmaster and suddenly I was in range of Torben's Behemoth, who hadn't even been targeted the whole tournie. Apparently, Behemoths can go berserk if you shoot at them, but I don't think the Broodmaster cared about that. He used his Neutron staff to shoot and with the help of the little Dice God, he managed to wound. Now, Torben had to use some kind of damage table to decide what happened. He managed to roll at 10 which means that the Behemoth died. I think he took it rather well, especially since the little Dice God made some rather nasty comments.

"I just want to kill that kid!"

For the rest of the game, the Broodmaster continued to trash Torben's army and he just couldn't wound it. On the other flank, the Larvans and Squad Britney killed some more guys without suffering any wounds. The utterly useless Squad Deva managed to kill a few Strike Commandoes before they panicked this time. In the end Torben only had a Mortar team left. That meant that I'd won. Heh.

1 x Unlucky Behemoth

The tournament was over. The guys from Berlin took first, second, and third places. I didn't even finish last which was pretty cool :)

There was also an "unlucky git" award. I nominated Torben because of the episode with the Dice God Kid, but he didn't win. Instead he won the "lucky git" award... go figure.... For some reason nobody nominated the Metal Alien Menace for best painted army. Instead Sven won. I guess he was really the unlucky git, cos the prize was Major Icharus Trask painted by me. Now Sven has three Major Trasks, but you can never have too many of those guys.

Overall the tournament was really cool. I had so much fun playing and the terrain was awesome. I also got to see Christian Weiss' Koralon army, which I've always admired.

Christians Broodmaster

The rest of the day was nice too. I bought some really nice terrain from Claus (aka Warmaster). Claus is a very nice fellow even though he likes to play weird games where you can decide the outcome of World War II.

I also had a long talk with Christian about painting and sculptors and manufactures and stuff like that. He also sold me an uber sucky brush. I can't paint with it at all, because it doesn't have that nice bent tip which all my synthetic brushes have.

Sunday was demo day and Søren and I were demoing Dark Age. Graham allowed us to borrow one of his super cool terrain boards for the demos. We had a really good time playing even though I had too many Void rules in my head.

Dark Age Demo

There were also some Bloodbowl games going on:

BloodBowl Tournament

After that I bought some more stuff from Christian and Jano before they packed everything away. Torben also introduced us to the game of Munchkin, but I think he was the only one who truly understood it. I managed to win though. Mostly because I just kept quiet and because I was an elf.....

Jano and Gero taking a break before the long trip home

Then we packed up and went home. For some reason the trip home was quite a lot shorter... maybe because we didn't take the detour. First we went to Give to drop of Torben. He was kind enough to show us his room which is kind of a museum. Lots of minis I'd never seen before (and which Torben had forgot that he'd ever seen before). Then we went home and on the way in, the wind managed to catch some of the terrain I'd bought from Claus. Stuff like that flies really well for some reason. Fortunately we were able to catch it again, and it wasn't broken... at least not a lot.

Anyway, that's about it. Thanks to all the people we met. You guys are great. Cya all next year :)
